penquins

Can many humans pitch-in to write a single novel? I’m guessing it’s going to be a tad disjointed. “Crowdsourcing. The Wisdom of the crowds. Social networking. Collaborative enterprise.” works best for wikipedia.

“A Million Penguins is an experiment in creative writing and community. Anyone can join in. Anyone can write. Anyone can edit.”

barcamp Miami

Today my eyes were opened, there are other dotcoms in Miami. Usually I’m working with our team in California or agencies in New York or Chicago, so little attention is paid to the scene down here. I’m hoping refreshmiami and Barcamp Miami are the tip of the iceberg, but my gut is telling me otherwise. Either way I will definitely be attending some of these conferences.

backpack

Backpack is a site that allows you to quickly make pages with to-do lists, notes, files, and images. It also features a Calendar and Reminders that can be sent via email or to your cell phone at predefined times.

Their suggested uses include: keep track of things to do and places to see on your next vacation, plan a home improvement project, organize a wedding, keep track of houses you’re considering buying or gather information for a research project.

Born of the 37 signals network.

Airtroductions

Airtroductions wants to make your next flight more interesting by allowing you to choose the person who sits next to you. Build a profile, enter your itinerary, match, and sit with them on your next flight.

A little creepy for the 3rd member of the row if the other two are on a date. It might however be nice to ensure you are sitting between two petite women instead of 300 pound men. I’m interested to see if there’s a ‘mile high club’ checkbox on the profile form.

Skype

“In addition to starting to charge for its service, Skype has announced they will be including a free “lie detector” to go with it.”

Could make for some ackward business calls, even if it doesn’t work.

Forerunner Google Earth

GPS watches

Strap on one of these watches and after your run check out your tracks on Google Earth. Navigadget explains what watches and software do the trick.

Probably looks pretty cool for hikes as well.

An offer you can’t refuse

Friday, December 8th, 2006
“Home listing site Zillow is making it possible to shop for homes that are not necessarily for sale with their new Make Me Move function, which launches on Thursday. Home owners who may have no intention of moving, but certainly would for the right price, can list information about their homes on Make Me Move so that gutsy buyers can try to make a deal.”

A cool idea, but will it work? I imagine most of the listings will be massively overpriced.

Underestimating the power of Borat and MySpace

borat_poster.jpg

MySpace held a special screening of the new Ali G/Borat movie last night in various locations around the country. In order to get in, you needed to add two specially made profiles to your Friend’s List ‘Top 8′ and bring a copy of your profile as your ticket.

I arrived about 45 minutes before doors opened to find a fairly large line. After waiting an hour and a half, the line cut off 20 people in front of me. Even a guy behind me dressed in a yellow Ali G sweatsuit and all the accessories was denied!

Apparently the lines were even worse in other cities.
