Greenpeace South Park

Greenpeace put together this South Park video with the boys as sea creatures to support the Bottom Trawling UN moratorium. The writing could be a bit better, but the animation is plenty entertaining.

Mutilated Manatee

Manatee

Sadly that is not the name of the lastest hip band. Some sick fucks attacked and killed a wild manatee in Homestead, FL.

“Officers say the suspects probably captured the animal, measuring roughly six feet long and between 500 and 600 pounds late Thursday or early Friday before cutting its throat and cutting off its fins.”

Aibo Dance

Gen Art and Pet Style hosted a short film contest and showed them Thursday night at the Raleigh in Miami Beach. Got to bring the Boston Terrier and drink free Stella, so it was hard to pass up.
I thought Pet Style was a new cable channel, but apparently it’s purely online for now.

Anyway, I was very impressed by two of the films, not so much by the others. Mirage won the overall prize and $5,000. The animation was fantastic, especially considering it was largely a one-man effort. However my favorite was Man’s New Best Friend, which culminates in an Aibo dance with “Together in Electric Dreams” as the soundtrack. Check out both films on Pet Style

Beard Championships

I sport a beard about half the time, but until now, haven’t thought of it in a competitive manner.

“The mission of Beard Team USA is to make the United States competitive at the bi-annual World Beard and Moustache Championships. Team USA is already gearing up for the next championships, which will take place in Brighton, England, on September 1, 2007, to be hosted by London’s world-famous Handlebar Club. “

A pretty complete site, including a blog and merchandise, and of course, plenty of great facial hair photos.

Fire dogs

“She (Jesse) got the shoulder of my pajamas and pulled me out of the smoke and then up to where the door was,” Hanson, 49, said Monday during a press conference at the Aurora Sheboygan Memorial Medical Center.”When I got up to the doorway, I heard the cat and before I could grab (Jesse), she ran up to get the cat and then I screamed and I screamed for her, but then I just heard her whine and then I didn’t hear anything more,” Hanson said.

Hanson got Jesse when the dog was 4 months old, she said. When Hanson lost her leg, she trained Jesse to assist her.

The above is not a picture of Jesse the dog, but a light hearted photo was needed after reading this sad story. RIP Jesse.

Bluegills fight terrorism

Bluegills

Many big cities are now using bluegills(aka sunfish or bream) to detect toxins in the municipal water supply.

“Bluegills — a hardy species about the size of a human hand — are considered more versatile. They are highly attuned to chemical disturbances in their environment, and when exposed to toxins, they experience the fish version of coughing, flexing their gills to expel unwanted particles.

The computerized system in use in San Francisco and elsewhere is designed to detect even slight changes in the bluegills’ vital signs and send an e-mail alert when something is wrong.

More than a dozen other cities have ordered the anti-terror apparatus, called the Intelligent Aquatic BioMonitoring System, which was originally developed for the Army and starts at around $45,000.”

dune worm (photo not to scale)

SPOKANE, Wash. - It’s 3 feet long, pinkish in color, smells like a lily and must be saved from extinction, conservationists said Thursday in asking the federal government to protect the Giant Palouse Earthworm under the Endangered Species Act.Long thought extinct, the worm was rediscovered in the past year to occupy tiny swatches of the heavily farmed Palouse region along the Washington-Idaho border.

“What kid wouldn’t want to play with a 3 foot-long, lily smelling, soft pink worm that spits?”
