Wired Wood

The 460 Degrees Gallery (Lexus owned?) sent an email invite for an “afternoon of art, music and food” and “the hottest tech toys reviewed by WIRED magazine” from 11am-1pm today. I got there shortly after 11am and the pictured crane was blocking the front door. Finally finding my way inside I was told things have been backed up until 12:30pm. I came back around 1pm (crane still there), wandered around in the chaos again before leaving disappointed.

Seeing Arne Quinze’s wood sculpture (pictured) erected and torn apart was interesting though. A similar structure, Uchronia, was built and burnt at this year’s Burning Man Festival. I believe Arne is third from the left on the roof.

Yoko Ono at The Sagamore

XM radio was fairly lowkey with their Art Basel party at The Sagamore with Yoko Ono. However it still had the South Beach touches. 3 private VIP areas for Yoko, some paparazzi, the star guest showing her face for 5 minutes, standard music(no beatles) and an Ingrid Casares sighting.

Yoko’s video installation played on flatscreens throughout the hotel. Also pictured are Sagamore owners Marty and Cricket Taplin, avid art collectors, who keep the hotel filled with many of their pieces.

Rabbit blimp

balloons
As part of Art Basel, the “Skywalker” art blimp parade took place on south beach today. The lineup showcased dirigibles designed by Ara Peterson, Misaki Kawai, Friends With You, Paper Rad, Mumbleboy, David Choe, and Devilrobots

Sadly no R2D2’s or ewoks. But they definitely made up for it. Here’s a few. Shoot me an email if you’d like full-size versions.

pipe screen
This Tobias Wong Tim E. Dubitsky designer pipe screen is debuting at Art Basel at the J Deitch/Paper Magazine Art Store. I’ll try to pick one up or at least get some photos on Thursday

update: These were actually made by Tim E. Dubitsky and edited by Tobias Wong. Looks like core77 corrected this mistake as well.

Yoko

“Offstage with Yoko Ono” is set to premiere today at 6pm on The Loft (ch 50) as part of XM Satellite Radio’s ongoing “Offstage” original music series.”
“The exclusive multi-part special will feature Ono with complete creative control selecting the music of her choice and speaking openly about whatever she chooses. In conjunction with the show’s debut, XM will be hosting an event during Art Basel at Social Miami at Sagamore.”

Found out today I’ll be attending that Sagamore event. I’ll try to update with some pics afterwards.

So it is possible to freeze booze…

Barton G Nitrogen Drink

I had dinner at the lavish Barton G restaurant tonight and they had drinks literally made of frozen alcohol. They use liquid nitrogen to make a cold ball of booze that slowly melts into your drink. Half of a margarita and half a martini had me floored, so I’m thinking it adds a lot of extra alcohol as it melts.

The rest of the meal was just as original/outrageous. Sashimi draped over crushed ice on two large fake ice cream cones. One entree served in a mini radio flyer wagon, another in a plant pot. A $40 cup of ’single origin’ coffee. Hazelnut ice cream with 3 sauces and mousse served on a squirrel lawn ornament. An $89 chocolate fountain dessert. After dinner drinks and dessert were ordered using an IPAQ PDA. Eating on a press comp made it all the more delicious.

update: Barton G and molecular gastronomist extraordinaire Richard Blais have parted ways.

Crackhead attacked by gator
For now 250 lb, 45-year-old Adrian Apgar is alive, but he’s in rough condition. The alligator has probably already been killed.

Congressman: ‘Miami a 3rd world country’

Tancredo

Rep. Tom Tancredo, R-Colo. was in Palm Beach, FL two weeks back and pointed to Miami as an example of why immigration is endangering the U.S. He was staying at The Breakers, which instantly renders him out of touch with the common man.

“It has become a Third World country. You just pick it up and take it and move it someplace. You would never know you’re in the United States of America. You would certainly say you’re in a Third World country.”

I for one enjoy the mix of development and lawlessness.

Manatee

Sadly that is not the name of the lastest hip band. Some sick fucks attacked and killed a wild manatee in Homestead, FL.

“Officers say the suspects probably captured the animal, measuring roughly six feet long and between 500 and 600 pounds late Thursday or early Friday before cutting its throat and cutting off its fins.”

Homeless in Miami Beach

About 5 days ago a man and woman literally started living in the street across the road from my building. I live in a decent area, but there are a few low-rent apts hanging on. Apparently these two were evicted and set up right on the sidewalk either out of protest or having nowhere else to go.

Cops pass by them daily, but don’t seem to care. The occasional passerby (as shown above) stops and talks with the lady (hidden behind the boxes) but usually leave looking more confused.

update: a Miami Beach ‘neighborhood services’ van came and helped them move the belongings-to where, I may never know.
