Port of Miami

A 20-year-old Iraqi did not have the correct paperwork when he tried to enter the Port of Miami earlier today. Around 8 a.m. driving an 18-wheeler loaded with electrical supplies, he approached the port’s main entrance. The FBI are still questioning three who tried to enter the port, but the incident was blamed partly on a “language barrier.”

Saban

After Nick Saban’s press conference announcing his departure to Alabama, Dan Le Batard went on the attack blasting Saban’s decision to run to the money:

“You know what he was as Dolphins coach? A failure. A loser. A gasbag. And one of the worst investments Dolphins owner Wayne Huizenga has ever made. He was less of a success than Dave Wannstedt and more of a traitor than Ricky Williams. There has been very little in franchise history that came with more expectations and fewer results than this hypocrite who at the end avoided the hard questions one last time.

Talk like a warrior. Behave like a weasel.”

I mostly agree with Le Batard. The Dolphins gave him time and this was their reward. I expected him to stick around at least another year to see if he could salvage his NFL reputation. Saban may bring about his own punishment though, he’ll be living in Alabama the next 10 years!

Lake Louisa

Off to Lake Louisa for the next two days (yes the best camping in Florida is in the dead of winter).

Then on New Years Day, heading into Orlando for the Capital One Bowl. Still debating whether a badger or a razorback would win if they met in the wild.

Hurricane zone or wal-mart housing?

gingerbread house

Picked up a ‘kwik build’ gingerbread house kit for $8.88 at Sam’s Club. Put it together in a home that was ravaged by hurricane andrew. After many attempts to support the roof with tree cookies, we thought our masterpiece was complete. Then while giving a tour, we noticed a wall was toppled over, surely crushing anyone still inside.

On the bright side, it was 80 degrees outside and I wasn’t in Denver International Airport.

Antikulture

Volume 1 Issue 1 has photos, artwork and a few stories. The spine says October 2006, but it seems to be the most recent issue. It’s largely south florida artists, but the reader submissions include folks from the UK, California, Canada and New Hampshire.

Coincidently it includes the Shepard Fairey print “Nouveau Black” which was recently ‘exposed’ as borrowing from an 1899 work.

Also featured is Colin Christian’s sculptures. Check them out here.

Their website has some basic info, but should fill out soon. In the meantime, visit their myspace page

Riley and Jackson through the years

Riley and Jackson

ESPN.com has a great comparison of the careers of two future hall-of-famers, from their high school days through last year’s Heat championship. Their game later today shouldn’t mean much compared to what they’ve played for/coached up til now, but as the two best coaches of their era go to battle once again, you know it will mean everything.

update: Heat roll 101-85.

Churchills pub and Sweat Records in Miami had a craft fair/concert Friday night. I picked up a few wallets from Tiny Meat, including the one above.

Motorcycle hits, flips car over

Car flipped

The motorcycle was going over 100 mph when it hit the sedan which was pulling onto the roadway. Sadly the driver of the car died (despite a doctor on scene) and the motorcyclist somehow lived. An interesting lesson in physics.

Square grouper

Square Grouper

Boingboing posted an article about some coke washing ashore in Hollywood, FL yesterday. Apparently it was 81 pounds and the package was covered in barnacles. When I first moved down here 6 years ago I remember a few packages washing up on Miami Beach at 41st street. Haven’t heard much since though. I guess most are probably picked up or lost in the swamps down in the southern tip of FL.

Check out the full story in the Miami Herald.

On a side note, I noticed wikipedia didn’t have an entry for ’square grouper’ so I added one, we’ll see how that goes. In my quick googling I found that there’s a bar in Jupiter, FL called Square Grouper. Apparently Alan Jackson filmed a music video there. I also came across this amusing fisherman’s tale on about.com.

Whatever the fee, MAC got their money’s worth with that sponsorship.

The Accident

“The chicken is a metaphor for human existence and the egg is a metaphor for the world and the laboratory of the future”
Koen Vanmechelen

Growing up around chickens, I enjoyed “The Accident” Though a little scary and disturbing (largely the cockfighting video).

The below ‘painting’ was made with eggs, feathers (as well as a few other ingredients) and I swear I could smell it.

Deitch Art Paper Store

I guess Thursday’s opening party at the Paper/Deitch Art Store was a little wild. Arriving Friday I found locked doors and through the window noticed plastic beer bottles strewn around the floor and turntables that themselves looked hungover. They finally opened back up today (Saturday) at 2pm. I’m guessing many of the items were already gone as there were some empty shelves (at least 2 items sold out in the time I was there). Please excuse the photos as I shot most of them through plexiglass.

Also, check out Paper Magazine, their latest issue includes a nice cover shot of Dita Von Teese and an article on Will Arnett.

Animal Powers

I happened upon this exhibit while looking for food in Miami’s Design District. Titled “The Protectors” and “Animal Powers”

“Peter Seidler exhibits an ecstatic presentation of militarized beings, manufactured objects internalize the pre-industrial order and present material instantiations of immaterial systems. The seed vocabulary for this work connects several systems of language, iconography, and technology in a new turbulence: the language of twenty-first-century science fiction fantasy, the wrathful deities of the Himalayas, contemporary weapon systems, and classical statuary. The wrathful deity statues of earlier eras sought to depict enlightened or uplifted forms of aggression in warrior cultures.”
