Someone push me down a well!

Wednesday, October 17th, 2007

Baby Jessica has some cash coming her way.

MIDLAND, Texas (AP) — The 18-month old girl pulled from a backyard well two decades ago is now a young wife and mother — one waiting to collect donations given to her during her ordeal that are expected to total $1 million or more.

Some of the rescuers didn’t fair as well:

In 1995, paramedic and rescuer Robert O’Donnell, who wriggled into the passageway and slathered a frightened Jessica in petroleum jelly before sliding her out into the bright television lights, shot and killed himself at his parents’ ranch outside Midland.

His brother, Rick, has said O’Donnell’s life “fell apart” because of the stress of the rescue, the attention it created and the anticlimactic return to everyday life.

In 2004, William Andrew Glasscock Jr., a former Midland police officer who helped in the rescue, was sentenced to 15 years in federal prison on charges of sexual exploitation of a child and improper storage of explosives. A year later, he was sentenced to 20 years on two state charges of sexual assault.

Falling apart because of the ’stress of the rescue’? Ridiculous.

Wasn’t he a Dick Tracey character?

Wednesday, September 19th, 2007

Yes, there’s a photo of ‘No Nose’ on the link.

LAKE ELSINORE, CA - Three men have been charged with kidnapping and assault in a case worthy of a cult movie plot.

A 48-year-old Lake Elsinore woman has accused the three of abducting, beating and dumping her in Mexico late last month.

The accused are the 45-year-old man the woman had been living with and two of his friends, said Detective Joe Greco of the Lake Elsinore Police Department. Greco said one of the men is nicknamed “No Nose” because his face is disfigured from a gunshot wound suffered years ago.
Hours after being left battered and bruised, the woman reappeared on her boyfriend’s Lake Elsinore doorstep demanding that he pay her $300 fare for a cab ride from the U.S-Mexico border.

“It’s like something out of a Quentin Tarantino movie,” Greco said. “The whole thing is just bizarre.”

Burying the n-word

N-word burial

Yeah, this should do it. Judging by the crowd at The Essence Fest in New Orleans this past weekend, ‘pimps’ and hos’ ain’t going anywhere either.

The coffin is to be placed at Detroit Memorial Park Cemetery and will have a headstone.

“Today we’re not just burying the N-word, we’re taking it out of our spirit,” said Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick. “We gather burying all the things that go with the N-word. We have to bury the ‘pimps’ and the ‘hos’ that go with it.”

He continued: “Die N-word, and we don’t want to see you ’round here no more.”

With all of Detroit’s problems, you’d think the money that went towards this ceremony would be better suited going towards almost anything else.

Man overboard

“The government has lifted a 22-year ban on burials at sea and now wants to encourage the practice to help ease overcrowding in Hong Kong cemeteries.”

Not a bad idea. The only problem is relatives won’t get to participate in the oddest holiday I’ve ever heard of:

“Many Chinese want to visit the graves or urns of their relatives and ancestors, as many did in Hong Kong on the festival of Ching Ming, or Grave Sweeping Day, which this year fell on the Thursday before Easter.”

These kids are twins

mixed twins

I’m still having trouble believing this.

“According to the Multiple Births Foundation, baby Kian must have inherited the black genes from both sides of the family, whilst Remee inherited the white ones. The odds of a mixed race couple having twins of dramatically different colour are a million to one.”

yeah, it’s ‘colour’, these babies are British.

RIP Larry “Bud” Melman

Calvert DeForest

Apparently Calvert DeForest, aka Larry “Bud” Melman, passed Monday at age 85.

While working as a file clerk at a drug rehabilitation facility, he was “discovered” by people associated with David Letterman’s show when he appeared in a New York University student’s film.

Video of Larry “Bud” Melman handing out hot towels at a NYC bus station.

Saw this crazy photo in a fascinating collection of old photos that show early life in the Dakotas. Here’s the entire collection. Some of my favorites include an incomplete Mt Rushmore, a general store and shocking oats

Shades of hatin’

Tuesday, February 27th, 2007

Author Bintell Powell was on The Howard Stern Show today discussing his new book Betrayed. It discusses the differences between light-skinned and dark-skinned African-Americans, Bintell says that it’s almost universal that lighter-skinned blacks discriminate and white America knows little about it. I’ve definitely heard these claims before and see it often here in South Florida with various hispanic groups, especially among lighter-skinned Cubans.

From the front of cnn.com today, Black America cool on Obama. Related? Somehow Obama trails Clinton by 15-20 points among black voters. Also puzzling, blacks are less likely to believe America is ready for a black president.

UPDATE 2/28/2007: Apparently a day makes a big difference, CNN now has on their front page “Black America starting to embrace Obama.” They cite a new poll which gives Obama a 44 to 33 percent lead over Clinton among black voters. Sounds like some shitty polling is going down.

UPDATE 3/1/2007:Another day, another article title: Does black America embrace Obama?

The (innercity) Alamo

the alamo

Who knew it was in downtown San Antonio? I’ve always pictured it out in the desert, but I guess that was 150 years ago. There’s some kind of conpiracy though, because searching google, there’s very very few images showing the alamo with it’s surrounding buildings. Yet the hotel I was staying in was 15 stories tall and my room overlooked The Alamo. Must be some Texas pride thing.

And like Pee Wee, they didn’t have my bicycle in the basement.

Saw San Antonio’s Riverwalk area for the first time this weekend as well. I really liked it’s setup and the great architecture. However for a Saturday night, it was empty. Also many boarded up stores/restaurants and the people that were there didn’t give off a vibe fitting of the place.
