Satellite radio changes would take time

Wednesday, March 26th, 2008

Alright, I’ve already purchased 3 Sirius radios in 2008, gotta draw the line somewhere!

The companies’ combined 17 million subscribers have radios that aren’t interoperable. Radios that can receive signals from both companies likely wouldn’t be available for at least a year after the merger - and a year or two after that for customers who get satellite radios via new car purchases.

Sounds like it’ll be another $3 for ‘the works’…

XM and Sirius say they plan to offer eight options that combine the companies’ offerings, such as a “mostly music” package with 65 channels, for $9.99 a month - less than the current flat rate of $12.95. Six of those eight options will be available on current radios.

The two “a la carte” packages that promise the most flexibility, however, will require new radios.

The cheapest “a la carte” option would offer 50 channels for $6.99 a month with additional channels costing 25 cents each, though premium choices, such as the NFL channel, would cost $3 or $6 each per month. Another “a la carte” plan would offer 100 channels for $14.99 a month.

Neil Diamond, pedophile?

Wednesday, November 21st, 2007

I kid, he’s one of my favorite artists, but he has revealed that Sweet Caroline was inspired by President Kennedy’s daughter.

“I’ve never discussed it with anybody before _ intentionally,” the 66-year-old singer-songwriter told The Associated Press on Monday during a break from recording. “I thought maybe I would tell it to Caroline when I met her someday.”

He got his chance last week when he performed the song via satellite at Caroline Kennedy’s 50th birthday party.

Diamond was a “young, broke songwriter” when a photo of the president’s daughter in a news magazine caught his eye.

“It was a picture of a little girl dressed to the nines in her riding gear, next to her pony,” Diamond recalled. “It was such an innocent, wonderful picture, I immediately felt there was a song in there.”

dodds

Philip V.W. Dodds, credited as Phil Dodds, was an audio engineer who appeared in the motion picture “Close Encounters of the Third Kind”. Working for ARP Instruments, Inc., Phil was on the set to install and manage the ARP 2500 synthesizer used in the movie to play the five alien tones, and to program it for the sounds the filmmakers wanted. He had performed a similar function on other science fiction films, such as Logan’s Run, and some of the early Star Trek movies.

mansinthe

I believe it was a recent Rolling Stone article that made me aware of Marilyn Manson’s absinthe obsession. Well he’s taken it to a new level, releasing his very own brand of the wormwood liquor. With who else but the Germans helping him distribute.

Keep Austin weird

Saturday, May 19th, 2007

hi how are you

If I hadn’t recently seen The Devil and Daniel Johnston I may have passed right by this graffiti in downtown Austin yesterday. I thought it was charcoal, but the next day I could see it was black spraypaint (and an older gentlemen was videotaping it, full-on with a tripod).

If you haven’t seen the movie, check it out. The plane keys moment is wild.

Daniel Johnston also recently (May 16th) played David Bowie’s “Highline” Festival.

Wyman metal

Bill Wyman has his own ’signature’ metal detector.

“My Bill Wyman Signature Detector is lightweight, easy to use and affordable – yet has significant performance levels. It is the ideal metal detector for anyone starting out treasure hunting”

The former Rolling Stones bassist has even written a book on hidden treasure. Surreal.

Elbe

The Elbe Philharmonic Hall is about to break ground in Hamburg Germany. It’s going to consist of a ‘new crystalline tent-like structure’ on top of a pre-existing warehouse (pictured in the link).

Jutting out into the river, this thing should look pretty cool.

Sanjaya

It’s unbelievable that many are saying that American Idol’s credibility will be lost if Sanjaya Malakar keeps making it past elimination. These people need a kick in the head and some Clockwork Orange style forced listening of quality music.

Join the movement to keep Sanjaya going. Even Erik the Midget’s close to being converted!

Miami PD loves drum and bass

Saturday, March 24th, 2007

Was fortunate enough to attend the VIRAM 2007 party for Winter Music Conference last night.

First, I saw a Miami-Dade firefighter walking around. He stood next to me for a bit, I asked if it was safe to be in the building, he replied “yeah, I’m just here for fun.” He then lit up a smoke and puffed away. A few minutes later a uniformed police officer showed up on the other side of me carrying a bag with Jamaican colors on it. I figured he’d just confiscated something. However, he started pulling candy out of it, mostly gum, and handing it out to teeth-grinders in the viscinity. Then he breaks out a glow stick, shakes it into illumination and throws it into the crowd below us! I guess the party wasn’t exciting enough for him yet. Later a female officer in a t-shirt and badge around her neck comes up to the first officer and gives him a big hug. Time for an inventory on the evidence locker….
