Kwik-E-Mart

Unfortunately I don’t see any Duff…

Here is a Kwik-E-Mart set up for The Simpsons movie promotion. Opened on 07/01. It’s in Burbank, CA at the corner of Olive & Verdugo in the 91505.

update: Apparently there are only a dozen 7-11s that made the switch. The only one in Florida is in Orlando. Looks like there is also one in Seattle. Here’s video from an Orlando station.

The seven deadly sins of kid culture

Monday, June 25th, 2007

I was in Atlanta over the weekend and picked up a copy of their alternative weekly, Creative Loafing. Inside was an interesting article on something I haven’t thought much about as I don’t have any kids yet. Kids entertainment usually commits many of the following sins:

1) INSIPIDNESS
2) BRATTINESS
3) “PRINCESS-NESS”
4) STEREO-TYPING
5) VIOLENCE
6) VULGARITY
7) SLUTTINESS

It was a revelation to me that even innocuous, insipid shows on PBS Kids might not all be equal, particularly when I compared “Clifford the Big Red Dog” with “Dragon Tales.” At first I preferred “Clifford,” because I liked the books when I was young, and the late John Ritter voiced the pachyderm-size pooch. More shrill and saccharine is “Dragon Tales,” the maddeningly inane adventures of human kids in candy-color Dragonland, featuring guests such as Princess Kidoodle of the Doodle Fairies.

It slowly dawned on me, however, that a high proportion of the “Clifford” stories involved characters behaving foolishly and receiving correction, while “Dragon Tales” emphasized working together to overcome phobia or accomplish a goal. “Clifford” seems more interested in shame as a motivation, while “Dragon Tales” rewarded achievement. Sometimes banality has a purpose, so it’s back to Dragonland for us.

Gawking and stalking

Saturday, May 5th, 2007

Emily Gould was on a recent episode of ‘Larry King Live’ to speak about Gawker, the Web site she co-edits. When guest host Jimmy Kimmel went on the attack about the site, she claims she was shocked (how long has she been in the paparazzi business?!). As you can see in the clip she rolls her eyes, however in a very forced manner. Yesterday she wrote an opinion piece in the NY Times. It really doesn’t add much to the original clip. Below are some excerpts:

“It’s hard to believe that Mr. Kimmel, a late-night talk show host who has made on-air inebriation a cornerstone of his public image, was truly upset that people knew he’d gone out drinking. So what was he really angry about?”

For some reason Emily can’t understand why someone would be upset about an untrue story (Kimmel claims), let alone one entitled “When Isn’t Jimmy Kimmel Visibly Intoxicated?” She also can’t distinguish between an on-air persona and real life.

“Gawker Stalker Map, a regular feature that displays brief, user-generated celebrity sightings on a map of Manhattan.”

I can imagine a number of people, crazy and relatively normal, using this map to try to see a celeb.

“Since the sightings aren’t posted in anything like real time, it would be a ludicrously ineffective tool for “real” stalkers.”

I strongly disagree. Many of these posts happen in stores or restaurants that stars may frequent on a daily basis. As admitted in the interview, some sightings are online within minutes-while dinner, a movie or other outing can last hours at one location.

Of course gawker.com can post whatever they please, but they shouldn’t be surprised when lawsuits start rolling in. Hopefully they just stay in the realm of slander…

It’s expected to completed in 2008 at a cost of $375 million. “The resort’s main attraction will be its outdoor ski and snowboard mountain with ski runs, chair lifts, competition half-pipes, toboggans, snow tubing, and ski caves.”

“Readymechs are free, flatpack toys for you to print and build. They are designed to fit on an 8.5″x11″ page and printed with any printer. You’ll need double-sided tape, thick matte paper, and 10-15 minutes for build time.”

My version of ‘Papercut of Death’ turned out pretty darn good.

What’s the McFLY 2015 project?

It’s a grassroots movement to get Nike to make available to consumers the futuristic-looking sneakers seen in the 1989 movie Back to the Future Part 2.

Sanjaya

It’s unbelievable that many are saying that American Idol’s credibility will be lost if Sanjaya Malakar keeps making it past elimination. These people need a kick in the head and some Clockwork Orange style forced listening of quality music.

Join the movement to keep Sanjaya going. Even Erik the Midget’s close to being converted!
