Apple corer

Alright, so this may put you over the limit of specialized fruit tools if you already have the lemon squeezer and the apple slicer from the MoMA Store, but it still looks cool. $26.

banana door stopper

After visiting the DailyCandy offices today, I swung around the corner to the Soho Moma store. One of the first things that caught my eye was the banana door stop.

Salt and pepper shakers

These hugging salt and pepper shakers were cute. The spices come out of their eye and mouth holes.

And the lemon squeezer was next to it’s sister item, the apple slicer, which I covered last year in Technotronic.

dog beer

“Once a year we go to Austria to hunt with our dogs, and at the end of the day we sit on the verandah and drink a beer. So we thought, my dog also has earned it,” said inventor Terrie Berenden.

Unfortunately it’s non-alcoholic, so my dog will be sticking to Miller High Life. It’s supposedly fit for humans, so I’m guessing it doesn’t taste like dog anus and garbage.

stash bottle

Apparently Miami weed is so good, you can’t leave Florida without some!

“The plastic bottle had a secret compartment that, when opened, had a dark residue and a pungent odor of marijuana.”

Actually sounds like it may be hash. Otherwise, I’m not sure why he’d risk carrying an empty, but used, stash container through the airport.

The coming organic foods shortage

Thursday, January 18th, 2007

USDA Organic

In 2005, $15 billion in certified organic products sold in the US, of which $1.5 Billion or 10% were imported. The organic industry accounted for just 2.5 percent of the nation’s food market in 2005, but organics of all types are having record growth; for example organic meat sales grew 55 percent.

As the demand increases, shortages will continue, driving up prices. As a country with the resources to pay, we’ll be able to import enough to cover the demand, however there may be a ‘import backlash.’ The eat locally trend is growing, stressing the environmental impact of transporting food from far away, when other local foods are available. It’s looked down upon to eat food from another region, let alone another country.

When selling drugs in Tennessee….

drug tax stamp

Supposedly you can anonymously purchase these drug tax stamps from the Dept of Revenue. I’d like to see one true dealer have the balls to walk into the Revenue office and buy one, many are sold to collectors. Of the 726 stamps sold so far, none have turned up during a seizure.

“In April of 2005, Jeremy Robbins was arrested attempting to traffic two tons of marijuana from Arizona to East Tennessee. Indicted on federal drug conspiracy charges, Robbins was soon assessed a $1.1 million fine from Tennessee’s Department of Revenue. The reason: failure to comply with the state’s Unauthorized Substances Tax, which requires anyone in possession of a certain quantity of contraband — in the case of marijuana, more than 42.5 grams — to buy a tax stamp from the state government and affix it on the drug.”

Opponents argue that the tax penalties on top of criminal charges amounts to a second punishment, and thus a violation of double jeopardy law. For this reason, a Davidson County chancellor ruled the tax unconstitutional, and stopped the state from collecting Robbins’ $1.1 million. The Tennessee Dept of Revenue believes this decision will be overturned on appeal.

Woman dies trying to win Wii

Sunday, January 14th, 2007
“A 28-year-old woman found dead hours after taking part in a radio station’s water drinking contest died of water intoxication, the coroner’s office said Saturday. Strange took part in a contest at radio station KDND 107.9 in which participants competed to see how much water they could drink without going to the bathroom.

The winner of the “Hold Your Wee for a Wii” contest was promised a Nintendo Wii video game system.”

Food Tree

A little is lost in translation, but the Chinese designers want to bring a more natural feeling to the family food box.

“People can pick up a fruit from a tree. Another is like a bird house. Doors can slide away when a hand is placed in front of it. It’s funny how one can draw out an egg from a bird’s nest. There is also a special device designed at the foot of the door, when people step on it, a wheel with small motor will slide the door open.

I’m not sure if it’d save or waste more energy than a standard frig. There’s multiple refrigerators here, but it might be better than opening one large door every time you want something.
