guerilla gardening

This Sunday I’ll be participating in Miami’s inaugural guerrilla gardening. This basically involves planting flowers and trees in run-down public areas. It’s not completely legal so I won’t say where our trial garden is. Somehow I went from being forced to garden for my father to volunteering to do it for neighborhoods I don’t live in. Another side effect of owning a pickup truck.

From the website it seems big in the UK. So far we are a pretty small group here in Miami and the only one in Florida.

Matchstick Garden

These cute matchbooks hold a clever secret inside. Tear out a matchstick, plant it tip first in soil and you will soon have a flower or herb garden growing. On the tip of each match are seeds already mixed to grow.

Ferris growing wheels

Ferris grow wheels

Pretty slick looking machines.

“According to the plea agreement, LATHAM designed eight machines out of aluminum that looked like ferris wheels. Each machine held 24 rows of plants with eight plants in each row for a total of 192 plants per machine. The plants would rotate around the machine, passing by grow lights, dipping into a hydroponic grow solution at the bottom or passing under a hydroponic groTacomaw solution spray at the top. In 2003-2004, the grow operation was located in a garage in rural Pierce County in McKenna, Washington. A co-conspirator, DANIEL IRWIN, lived on the property and hung a deteriorating deer carcase near the door to the building so that the smell of the rotting deer would mask the smell of marijuana.

In March of 2004, someone discovered the grow operation and LATHAM determined it needed to be moved. In the middle of the night on March 8, 2004, LATHAM and others attempted to move the operation to a warehouse at S. Clement Street in Tacoma. Neighbors heard what they thought was suspicious activity in the alley and called Tacoma Police. LATHAM was arrested and 2,083 marijuana plants were seized.”

15 years for those mistakes. ouch.

readymech

“Readymechs are free, flatpack toys for you to print and build. They are designed to fit on an 8.5″x11″ page and printed with any printer. You’ll need double-sided tape, thick matte paper, and 10-15 minutes for build time.”

My version of ‘Papercut of Death’ turned out pretty darn good.

8 bit tie

Depending on your workplace, this may or may not qualify as a legitimate tie. If not, it’s gotta fly on casual fridays. If not even then, you need a new job.

As an added bonus, it’s a clip-on! $19.99.
