Animal Powers

I happened upon this exhibit while looking for food in Miami’s Design District. Titled “The Protectors” and “Animal Powers”

“Peter Seidler exhibits an ecstatic presentation of militarized beings, manufactured objects internalize the pre-industrial order and present material instantiations of immaterial systems. The seed vocabulary for this work connects several systems of language, iconography, and technology in a new turbulence: the language of twenty-first-century science fiction fantasy, the wrathful deities of the Himalayas, contemporary weapon systems, and classical statuary. The wrathful deity statues of earlier eras sought to depict enlightened or uplifted forms of aggression in warrior cultures.”

Wired Wood

The 460 Degrees Gallery (Lexus owned?) sent an email invite for an “afternoon of art, music and food” and “the hottest tech toys reviewed by WIRED magazine” from 11am-1pm today. I got there shortly after 11am and the pictured crane was blocking the front door. Finally finding my way inside I was told things have been backed up until 12:30pm. I came back around 1pm (crane still there), wandered around in the chaos again before leaving disappointed.

Seeing Arne Quinze’s wood sculpture (pictured) erected and torn apart was interesting though. A similar structure, Uchronia, was built and burnt at this year’s Burning Man Festival. I believe Arne is third from the left on the roof.

Yoko Ono at The Sagamore

XM radio was fairly lowkey with their Art Basel party at The Sagamore with Yoko Ono. However it still had the South Beach touches. 3 private VIP areas for Yoko, some paparazzi, the star guest showing her face for 5 minutes, standard music(no beatles) and an Ingrid Casares sighting.

Yoko’s video installation played on flatscreens throughout the hotel. Also pictured are Sagamore owners Marty and Cricket Taplin, avid art collectors, who keep the hotel filled with many of their pieces.

Rabbit blimp

balloons
As part of Art Basel, the “Skywalker” art blimp parade took place on south beach today. The lineup showcased dirigibles designed by Ara Peterson, Misaki Kawai, Friends With You, Paper Rad, Mumbleboy, David Choe, and Devilrobots

Sadly no R2D2’s or ewoks. But they definitely made up for it. Here’s a few. Shoot me an email if you’d like full-size versions.

pipe screen
This Tobias Wong Tim E. Dubitsky designer pipe screen is debuting at Art Basel at the J Deitch/Paper Magazine Art Store. I’ll try to pick one up or at least get some photos on Thursday

update: These were actually made by Tim E. Dubitsky and edited by Tobias Wong. Looks like core77 corrected this mistake as well.
