Thursday, April 19th, 2007A killer exhibit featuring characters many of us grew up with. A variety of styles. I definitely would have emptied my pockets at this show.

Random performance generator
Monday, February 26th, 2007Tonight the Carnival Center in Miami hosted ‘Split Sides’ a dance performance featuring music from Sigur Ros (live) and Radiohead. At the start of the performance a die was rolled to see determine choreography, music, costumes, backdrops, and lighting. A total of 32 possible combinations. With only two choices for each category, I’m not sure why they didn’t just flip a coin. Maybe for the symbolism of ‘rolling the bones.’ Either way, a decent concept for changing up the show. In practice however one backdrop clearly seemed to be for Radiohead and the other for Sigur Ros. I also thought the black and white costumes would have went better with the backdrop displayed during Sigur Ros set instead of the colored costumes.
Here are some photos from the original 2003 version.
A trip to the Soho MoMa
Thursday, February 1st, 2007
After visiting the DailyCandy offices today, I swung around the corner to the Soho Moma store. One of the first things that caught my eye was the banana door stop.
These hugging salt and pepper shakers were cute. The spices come out of their eye and mouth holes.
And the lemon squeezer was next to it’s sister item, the apple slicer, which I covered last year in Technotronic.
Are they used for skating anymore?
Tuesday, January 30th, 2007
Seems like the only skateboards I see these days are used as an art canvas (or in a Tony Hawk videogame). I guess I’m not crazy, there’s a whole book on the subject.
Nice melons
Tuesday, January 9th, 2007Some amazing creations. Includes instructions so you can make your own.
Also see these cool olive penquins. A friend made them for a holiday party, they actually looked even better as they also had red pepper scarves.
antikulture magazine launches
Tuesday, December 26th, 2006Volume 1 Issue 1 has photos, artwork and a few stories. The spine says October 2006, but it seems to be the most recent issue. It’s largely south florida artists, but the reader submissions include folks from the UK, California, Canada and New Hampshire.
Coincidently it includes the Shepard Fairey print “Nouveau Black” which was recently ‘exposed’ as borrowing from an 1899 work.
Also featured is Colin Christian’s sculptures. Check them out here.
Their website has some basic info, but should fill out soon. In the meantime, visit their myspace page

Critical coverage
Monday, December 11th, 2006I didn’t snap many pics at the various art basel festivities last night, or at the main convention center event today, but Critical Miami has some nice photos.
chicken and the eggs

“The chicken is a metaphor for human existence and the egg is a metaphor for the world and the laboratory of the future”
Koen Vanmechelen
Growing up around chickens, I enjoyed “The Accident” Though a little scary and disturbing (largely the cockfighting video).
The below ‘painting’ was made with eggs, feathers (as well as a few other ingredients) and I swear I could smell it.

Deitch shiznit
Saturday, December 9th, 2006
I guess Thursday’s opening party at the Paper/Deitch Art Store was a little wild. Arriving Friday I found locked doors and through the window noticed plastic beer bottles strewn around the floor and turntables that themselves looked hungover. They finally opened back up today (Saturday) at 2pm. I’m guessing many of the items were already gone as there were some empty shelves (at least 2 items sold out in the time I was there). Please excuse the photos as I shot most of them through plexiglass.
Also, check out Paper Magazine, their latest issue includes a nice cover shot of Dita Von Teese and an article on Will Arnett.
