I’ve chosen a side in the dvd war

Tuesday, July 31st, 2007

I’m now the owner of a PS3. Went looking for a high definition dvd player and the best price I could find was $325 for a decent Toshiba. I decided to drop another $174 and get a PS3, which includes a Blu-ray player. So fuck HD-DVD, long live Blu-ray.

So far Sony, Blockbuster and Samsung are on my side. Microsoft becomes more of an enemy.

Picked up The Fountain as a test movie and thoroughly enjoyed it. Five movies came with qualifying players, but that offer forced me into choices such as Stealth, Resident Evil 2, Underworld Evolution or Stir of Echoes. I went with a sweaty Kate Beckinsale.

komfort pets

Keep your pet happy with this climate-controlled pet carrier. They currently aren’t allowed on public planes, perhaps their biggest potential use.

Unfortunately those who leave their pets to die in hot cars likely aren’t the same folks that would purchase one of these.

Your walkability

Monday, July 30th, 2007

What is Walk Score? Walk Score helps people find walkable places to live. Walk Score calculates the walkability of an address by locating nearby stores, restaurants, schools, parks, etc.

And like most new sites, it uses google maps.

My home scored an 88, while my more suburban office scored a 48.

youdeparted

YouDeparted lets your loved ones access up to 5GB of electronic files when after you pass.

When you pass away, your Recipients will unlock your account. Once a minimum number (set by you) of Recipients sign in and confirm your death, your account will be unlocked after a time delay (which can be set by you). The information and instructions you saved will be sent to your family and friends.

Unless you plan on dying soon, $9.95 per year seems pricey.

The chimp and dog show

ChimpDog

If this were on in the states, it’d probably be my favorite program. From the Japanese TV show Shimura Zoo, these clips feature chimp Pan-kun and his dog James.

bored border patrol

This past weekend I was working at the National Council of La Raza (NCLR) Conference at the Miami Beach Convention Center. The NCLR is the largest national Hispanic civil rights and advocacy organization in the United States. Set up in the booth directly across from ours was U.S. Customs and Border Patrol. Over the two days I saw exactly 1 person give them a visit! Make your own joke from that.

Speaking of protection, security was extremely lax. Obama and Hillary Clinton were speaking at the event (didn’t see Bill around). At one point I walked right up to the back of the stage Obama was on without anyone harassing me. Later I saw a ‘Barack the vote’ banner that made me chuckle. I’m amazed how many people think he has any chance of winning.

and it’s got cancer. A rather cool way to raise awareness actually. I know I’m eating better after looking at that patch of advanced cancer.

Sippy cup with a surprise

sippy cup

Slap on a Transformers or Backyardigans sticker and the kids should be thrilled. Are lunch boxes are still around? $5.95 per Dozen seems very cheap.

Looks like it’d also work for milk and cookies.

The Tullibardine Distillery in Scotland is selling wood chips for your smoking pleasure. The chips are made from Tullibardine Distillery’s used oak casks, which previously contained 12 year old whiskey.

Here’s the American version, Jack Daniels chips.

Sextra credit

Here is a list of 100 teacher ‘sexpidemic’ cases where female teachers have been accused, or convicted, of assaulting students.

Overall a fairly good looking group. Perhaps that’s just the cases that get the attention though.

mansinthe

I believe it was a recent Rolling Stone article that made me aware of Marilyn Manson’s absinthe obsession. Well he’s taken it to a new level, releasing his very own brand of the wormwood liquor. With who else but the Germans helping him distribute.

The pathetic state of airport wireless

Thursday, July 12th, 2007

I’m writing from one of the few bright spots, FLL. Fort Lauderdale has free wireless throughout the airport and it’s lightning fast. Last weekend I searched MSY (New Orleans), including asking workers and moving around to different gates, and found nothing. Many others offer it at $9.95. Lame if you only have an hour or so. Another crappy solution is internet kiosks. They will soon look as dated as pay by the quarter tv seats, which MSY still has plenty of.

Off to Virginia. Looking forward to trying out Sally Bell’s Kitchen on Sunday.

layover update: free wireless in CLT!
