Kansas St ends chicken tossing

Wednesday, February 28th, 2007

“For years, Kansas State students have smuggled live chickens into basketball games against Kansas, then thrown them onto the court and behind the opposing bench before tip-off – mocking their rival’s Jayhawk mascot.
But an animal rights group objected to the mistreatment of chickens, and the school issued an open letter to fans this week calling for an end to the practice.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals responded to the latest incident during a game Feb. 19 by sending a letter to university president Jon Wefald. The letter described chickens as “very intelligent and inquisitive animals” that appeared to have been subjected to “deafening noise, bright lights, terror, abusive handling and likely death for the sake of amusement.”

I’m not so concerned with what happens to the chickens during the prank, chickens are tough, but would they starve to death on the streets of Manhatten, Kansas afterwards?

Shades of hatin’

Author Bintell Powell was on The Howard Stern Show today discussing his new book Betrayed. It discusses the differences between light-skinned and dark-skinned African-Americans, Bintell says that it’s almost universal that lighter-skinned blacks discriminate and white America knows little about it. I’ve definitely heard these claims before and see it often here in South Florida with various hispanic groups, especially among lighter-skinned Cubans.

From the front of today, Black America cool on Obama. Related? Somehow Obama trails Clinton by 15-20 points among black voters. Also puzzling, blacks are less likely to believe America is ready for a black president.

UPDATE 2/28/2007: Apparently a day makes a big difference, CNN now has on their front page “Black America starting to embrace Obama.” They cite a new poll which gives Obama a 44 to 33 percent lead over Clinton among black voters. Sounds like some shitty polling is going down.

UPDATE 3/1/2007:Another day, another article title: Does black America embrace Obama?

Missile balloons

These balloons create the shocking effect that some missiles are chasing your vehicle. Alas, they are probably illegal.

Stats that’d make Bruce Banner blush

Tuesday, February 27th, 2007

The paperback version of Game of Shadows comes out this week. It includes a new afterword which details Barry Bonds’ freakish growth, size changes include:

    42 to size 52 jersey
    10.5 to size 13 cleats
7 1/8 to 7 1/4 cap, even though he had taken to shaving his head

As Tom Verducci writes “baseball remains hostage to the ill will Bonds generates…the stench of stagnation is everywhere.” Progress may come in the form of Bonds be indicted for perjury in the next six months.

Convertible balcony

Tuesday, February 27th, 2007

The bloomframe allows for conversion from a window to a balcony and back to a window. I’m not sure why you wouldn’t want a permanent balcony, but I’m always for more options. I imagine they’ll make it with higher railings (the woman’s center of gravity in the concept picture is above the rail).

split sides

Tonight the Carnival Center in Miami hosted ‘Split Sides’ a dance performance featuring music from Sigur Ros (live) and Radiohead. At the start of the performance a die was rolled to see determine choreography, music, costumes, backdrops, and lighting. A total of 32 possible combinations. With only two choices for each category, I’m not sure why they didn’t just flip a coin. Maybe for the symbolism of ‘rolling the bones.’ Either way, a decent concept for changing up the show. In practice however one backdrop clearly seemed to be for Radiohead and the other for Sigur Ros. I also thought the black and white costumes would have went better with the backdrop displayed during Sigur Ros set instead of the colored costumes.

Here are some photos from the original 2003 version.

Never bring $81,000 into a strip club

Friday, February 23rd, 2007

And definitely don’t expect to walk out with it. Mission accomplished though, the ensuing chaos must have been a great ‘visual effect’!

“Police seized $81,020 in cash belonging to Tennessee Titans cornerback Adam “Pacman” Jones, money they said sparked a melee and a triple shooting at a strip club over the weekend.

Jones was showering more than 40 strippers onstage at Minxx Gentlemen’s Club & Lounge early Monday with the cash “intended as a visual effect,” according to a search warrant. But a scuffle broke out when the Houston promoter who hired the strippers told them to pick the money up.”

Ron Jeremy as Mario

Can’t wait for the remote extension!

The Hedgehogg looks pretty convincing as Mario. Way better than Bob Hoskins.
