Joel Osteen’s got nothing on Shamu

Having some time to kill on Saturday, I visited Seaworld. Having never been, I expected the usual Disney crap. For the most part I was right, $70 tickets, a high amount of asians and strollers. I was happy to see that almost every exhibit stressed helping the animals. Even the dogs and cats in the pet circus (which had cats and rats living in peace!) were adopted from local animal shelters. Then there was Shamu.
They went very spiritual with the show. Four large, sometimes twirling, video screens told the story of the trainer who had a killer whale encounter as a child and grew up to surf the likes of Shamu in an Orlando pool! A series of odd dances and chants creeped me out. On the way out of the stadium SeaWorld employees offered necklaces featured in the ‘Believe’ video. Unlike the original hand-carved version, these had a very visible ‘Made in China’ sticker.

update: Anheuser-Busch had a lot of signs around Seaworld. They were major sponsors, along with SouthWest Airlines and some others companies. Today I accidentally failed an age check on Bud’s crowntown.tv, it redirected to a page of Anheuser-Busch Adventure Parks, which included a banner of Shamu’s Believe show.
