Siberia ravaged by bootleg vodka

Russian vodka drinkers

In Russia, vodka should be cheaper than any of those liquids used as substitutes!

Fourteen towns in the Irkutsk region of Siberia have declared a state of emergency, amid a dramatic upsurge in mass poisonings caused by fake vodka. Almost 900 people in the region are in hospital with liver failure, apparently after drinking industrial solvent. They say the most common substances are de-icers, anti-rust treatments and window-cleaning solutions.”

Songbird, fly through the night

Saturday, October 28th, 2006

So far I’m loving Songbird. It’s only at version 0.2 and it crashed on me within my first 2 hours of previewing it, but it’s features are fabulous. This media player is built on the same platform as firefox and plays local and online music. Go to any web site and it will scan the page finding the media and showing a playlist. Click on any of the songs, play it, pause it, download it to your library. A built-in search box includes Singingfish, and others.Songbird cross platform

If I haven’t convinced you to download this app, this screencast should.

Friendly with Windows, Mac and Linux

Candy cornholing

Friday, October 27th, 2006

While may sound dangerous, it’s entertaining and worth a browse.

Halloween is here and what better way to celebrate then a candy corn dildo or buttplug! In fact, there’s a whole subsection of Halloween toys. Thinking of the lab these are created in and seeing the photos is a little creepy.

Beard Team USA

Beard Championships

I sport a beard about half the time, but until now, haven’t thought of it in a competitive manner.

“The mission of Beard Team USA is to make the United States competitive at the bi-annual World Beard and Moustache Championships. Team USA is already gearing up for the next championships, which will take place in Brighton, England, on September 1, 2007, to be hosted by London’s world-famous Handlebar Club. “

A pretty complete site, including a blog and merchandise, and of course, plenty of great facial hair photos.

Warning, this may only exist as a clip in an asian fetish video. I don’t see it for sale anywhere.

The Fillmore Southeast?

Wednesday, October 25th, 2006

Jackie Gleason Theater

I’d like to have been in the meeting when this idea came up. “Adding the word Fillmore to the venue name will definitely increase attendence!” I’d have suggested “Super Terrific Fun-time Jackie Gleason Theater” though.

“The (Miami) Herald reported that Live Nation, the top U.S. concert promoter, said they would rename the South Beach venue “The Fillmore Miami Beach at the Incredible Jackie Gleason Theater” in an effort to put a more modern spin on the venue.”

The All Terrain Cabin (ATC)

Friday, October 20th, 2006

“The result is as smart as it is efficient, suitable for a family of four and a pet to live off the grid in comfort and contemporary style. It travels by train, truck, ship, airplane or helicopter, folded up and indistinguishable from any ordinary shipping container. Once it arrives, it unfolds rapidly to 480sf of self-contained, sophisticated living space with all the comforts of home.”.

Dog saves woman, dies trying to help cat

Fire dogs

“She (Jesse) got the shoulder of my pajamas and pulled me out of the smoke and then up to where the door was,” Hanson, 49, said Monday during a press conference at the Aurora Sheboygan Memorial Medical Center.”When I got up to the doorway, I heard the cat and before I could grab (Jesse), she ran up to get the cat and then I screamed and I screamed for her, but then I just heard her whine and then I didn’t hear anything more,” Hanson said.

Hanson got Jesse when the dog was 4 months old, she said. When Hanson lost her leg, she trained Jesse to assist her.

The above is not a picture of Jesse the dog, but a light hearted photo was needed after reading this sad story. RIP Jesse.

Driving with the Devil

Driving with the Devil
Southern Moonshine, Detroit Wheels, and the Birth of NASCAR
Written by Neal Thompson

A history of how NASCAR came to be. Moonshiners running from the Feds needed fast cars and even better driving skills. Many things today’s corporate NASCAR doesn’t like to acknowledge. And perhaps solving the great Chevy vs Ford debate, it’s revealed that the first car of choice was the Ford V-8.

Some other interesting revelations:
-The South didn’t have pro sports(which obviously helped racing grow) until the Braves moved to Atlanta in 1965.
-The early Daytona track was just A1A and the actual beach.
-The first champion, Red Byron, had to have his badly damaged leg(WW II) attached to his clutch.

Mens Journal Top 5 Beers

Men’s Journal picked their top 25 U.S. Beers. Happy to see my favorite brewery, New Glarus(#25 Yokel), making the list. I can also attest to the Sprecher brewery(#17 Hefe Weiss) having a very nice tour and sampling.

Delta bed seat

Comfort is coming. For the rich anyway(aka ‘BusinessElite’). Hopefully it’ll trickle down to us peons within a decade. The pictured seat reclines into a 6 foot 3 inch bed. An added benefit is no children or obese folks with lovehandles seeping over the armrest seated next to you.

UW Library joins Google book project

Google Book Bucky

Proud of my former school and employer (I worked a few semesters in the Chemistry Library) for getting involved in Google Print and trying to get as much material out there as possible.

“The University of Wisconsin-Madison and Google plan to provide access to hundreds of thousands of public and historical materials from the UW-Madison libraries and the Wisconsin Historical Society Library, they said.”Those books and documents represent one of the largest U.S. collections of historical and government documents. They will be selected from a combined 7.2 million library holdings.””The University of Wisconsin-Madison joins the University of California and Spain’s Universidad Complutense de Madrid — two other major libraries Google has announced are participating in the library book search project in the past two months.”

“The Google Books Library Project began last year with five participating libraries — the University of Michigan, Harvard University, Stanford University, the New York Public Library and Oxford University. Google is also conducting a pilot project with the Library of Congress.”

GRINDHOUSE: Death Proof & Planet Terror

Wednesday, October 11th, 2006

“Two full length feature horror movies written by Quentin Tarantino & Robert Rodriguez put together as a two film features. Including fake movie trailers in between both movies.”

Also, if you haven’t been, check out Apple’s collection of trailers. Includes fantastic hi-def versions of many. I highly recommend spiderman 3(now pulled?) or borat
